Place

Definition: A behavior where your dog goes, when cued, to a specifc spot/place, lays down, and stays in that location until released

Purposes: Stationing behavior and alternate behavior to common "nuisance" behaviors:

• Door rushing

• Food begging

• Exuberant greetings

Promotes:

• Healthy separation

• Building independence

• Impulse control

• Boundary practice

Gear:

• Treat pouch and treats

• "Place ""bed"":

  • The bed can be any object or spot with an outline/boundary that can be clearly identified by your dog. This can range from plush dog beds to elevated platforms, to spots on the couch, to yoga mats, or even towels.

  • It is beneficial for your dog to be comfortable laying down on whatever you choose for your Place bed.

  • If you goal is to be able to easy use this cue in many environments, selecting an easily portable bed is a good idea. If it's specific to 1 environment a bulky, more comfortable bed may make sense.
